TV Stands vs Wall Mounts: Which Makes Your TV Look Better?

We use both wall mounts and stands for our TVs in our house. I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting it to make a difference in how I watched TV. 

But I was wrong. 

TV stands and wall mounts have pros and cons, which we’ll cover in the below sections. Choosing the right one for your TV isn’t as simple as you might think, but we’ll guide you through the decision process. Read on!

TV Stands: Benefits

A TV stand comes with quite a few pros that are hard to overlook. The most significant ones are:

• Easy setup. 
• Extra storage space. 
• Improved looks. 

Combining these three aspects gives you a complete package that is hard to beat.

Easy Setup

Setting up a TV stand is generally much less complicated than setting up a wall mount. Even considering that most TV stands come unassembled, the assembly time is still less than mounting a TV and running cables through the wall. 

Unlike with a wall mount, you don’t have to worry about trying to balance the mount while drilling screws into your wall studs. With a TV stand, you’ll usually have to put in a few screws with a screwdriver and maybe use an Allen wrench.

Aside from that, the only other challenge is deciding where to put the stand in your room. This is significantly easier when you don’t have an extra pair of hands to help you out.

Extra Storage Space

While not all TV stands offer additional storage space, many offer a variety of shelves, drawers, or little cubbies to store your remotes or accessories. 

For most people, this is probably the most significant selling point. 

It’s convenient to have your movies, gaming consoles, or whatever other entertainment media you enjoy right beneath your TV.

The extra space you get will largely depend on choosing a TV stand with open shelves, drawers, or cupboards. Open shelves are generally better for displaying stuff. At the same time, drawers are suitable for holding minor things like remotes and other accessories.

A combination of all three is usually best. Still, the TV stands with more storage options also tend to be the most expensive. Something to keep in mind when you’re shopping. 

Adds to Your Room’s Decor

Adding a good-looking TV stand can improve a room if used correctly, filling otherwise empty space or adding to your existing decor. Either way, you can bring out your style in a room if you buy a TV stand that compliments the rest of the furniture in the room.

This takes a bit of planning, however. You can’t just buy whatever TV stand you like and expect it to complement the room. 

That’s not to say that it has to get over-complicated either. If you have sleek furniture, for example, don’t get a TV stand that has a bulky design because it probably won’t look right.

TV Stands: Cons

As great as some of the pros of TV stands are, two significant cons might make you reconsider buying one. 

They’re Not Adjustable

When you put a TV on a stand, there isn’t much you can do aside from moving it from left to right. Even that is rarely a good idea because it looks strange not to have a TV in the middle of a stand. 

While this may seem like a minor inconvenience, the lack of adjustability makes it critical to purchase precisely the right height TV stand for your room. 

If it’s too tall or too short, you can’t adjust it, and your TV won’t be at the correct viewing angle.

Even if you do get the height correct, it’s usually only correct for one specific seat in your room. TV stands lack the flexible viewing experience of a wall mount because they can’t be adjusted on the fly.

Safety Concerns

Believe it or not, using a TV stand is much more dangerous than a wall mount because the TV is not as secure. 

There’s a risk of the TV getting knocked off the stand, especially if you have small children or pets who like to run around in the house. It’s also easier for children to access the cables at the back of your TV since they won’t be hidden inside the wall.

Wall Mounts: Benefits

In most cases, a wall mount is superior to a TV stand for its adjustability, safety, and ability to save space in your room.

Adjustability

A TV stand forces a TV to remain in one position, resulting in a narrow viewing angle that’s usually only correct for one person in the room. 

By contrast, a wall mount offers a wide range of motion that allows you to customize your viewing experience. 

Depending on the wall mount type, you can move a mounted TV up, down, left, right, and turn it in multiple directions.

Wall mounts allow you to adjust your TV to get the perfect viewing experience, whether you’re sitting in your living room or in the kitchen making dinner.

You’ll Save Space

If you don’t need to fill empty space in a room, a wall mount is better than a TV stand. 

Wall mounts allow for far more location options for your TV because there is generally less stuff on the walls of a room than on the floors.

Wall mounts enable you to keep your room open and airy. Alternately, you could use the area you were going to use for the TV stand and use it for something else like a sofa or some additional storage. 

If you live in a smaller apartment, a wall mount is perfect for making a small room feel bigger. 

Some homeowners even mount their TV above their TV stand, allowing them to use the top shelf for other things. 

Higher Overall Safety

Compared to TV stands, wall mounts are a much safer option overall. They secure a TV to a wall and keep them out of arm’s reach, which makes it more difficult for small children to reach and removes the risk of the TV falling over.

This isn’t a significant concern if you don’t have small children, but it’s still nice to know that your TV is safely secured when using a wall mount.

Wall Mounts: Cons

Compared to TV stands, wall mounts only have one real downside: the installation process. 

The installation process for a wall mount is much more demanding than for a stand for a few different reasons. 

The main issue is getting the wall mount and the TV up on the wall. The bigger and heavier they are, the more difficult this part of the process winds up being.

You then have to thoroughly secure both the mount and TV, as you risk having them fall if you do not put them up properly. 

Given that it takes a fair bit of work to get a TV wall mount up, you can probably already guess that it also takes a similar amount of work to get it down. 

That means you need to be VERY sure about where you want to put the mount before you put it up. You don’t want to punch holes in your walls by repeating the mounting process multiple times.

If you’re handy with power tools, you likely won’t find putting up a wall mount that difficult. If not, it’ll take you a fair bit of time and some trial and error, so be prepared for that.
