Pirate Streaming Sites Blocked Following Requests from DAZN

Over 45 pirate streaming sites have been blocked following requests filed by DAZN.

Amid heightened anticipation, Italy’s sports rightsholders missed the beginning of the local football season.

However, the tides seem to be turning. Italy’s telecoms regulator, AGCOM, recently declared the successful blockage of 45 sports streaming websites that were pirating content.

These actions followed requests from DAZN, a prominent sports streaming platform. Interestingly, two websites had also been in the crosshairs of a U.S. law enforcement domain seizure campaign the previous year.

A Delayed Start in Anti-Piracy Efforts

July saw Italian lawmakers finally sanction strong legislation targeted at curbing pirate IPTV services in the country.

But while fans and stakeholders eagerly awaited results, the start of the football season saw nearly 100 instances of pirated services without a single blockade.

Media sources hinted that the delay was due to a required technical discussion among involved parties.

Such delays didn’t sit well with the public, especially given the narrative that piracy poses a significant threat to the future of Italy’s top-tier football.

DAZN, possibly prompted by these circumstances, decided to step up its efforts against piracy by applying for immediate site-blocking measures in late August.

DAZN’s Campaign Gets a Win

AGCOM’s announcement of DAZN’s triumph against pirated websites was somewhat unexpected. Traditionally, site-blocking didn’t grab headlines.

This shift might signal the rising importance of these measures in today’s digital landscape.

As the official holder for Serie A and Serie B broadcasting rights, DAZN’s push has culminated in AGCOM issuing multiple precautionary orders against infringing sites.

What’s even more unique about this scenario is AGCOM publicly expressing gratitude towards Italy’s ISPs for actively assisting in blocking these websites.

This kind of public acknowledgment is rare, indicating a change in stance on piracy and collaboration.

Piracy: An International Challenge

The issue of sports streaming piracy isn’t just Italy’s problem. In December 2022, during the FIFA World Cup, U.S. law enforcement went on a domain seizure spree.

Websites such as SoccerStreams were scrutinized, with affiliated domains like NFLbite, NBAbite, and Footybite seemingly untouched.

SoccerStreams

However, DAZN’s documents have connected ‘Soccer Streams’ to pirate streaming platforms nflbite.to and footybite.to. DAZN’s investigative efforts spotted links between these websites, prompting AGCOM to take simultaneous action.

In a dedicated move, DAZN has reported multiple platforms that violate copyrights. Websites like kooora365.com, Elixx.xyz, and nizarstream.xyz were caught broadcasting Serie A championship matches illegally.

DAZN’s persistent efforts have culminated in dozens of applications against these sites.

DAZN’s list doesn’t end there. The platform sought preventative measures against a plethora of domains, ranging from calciostreaming.click and bdnewszh.com to pirlotvonline.fr and rojadirectatvhd.it.

AGCOM, in a display of strict adherence to rules, directed local ISPs to enforce DNS blocking on these domains. As a result, anyone attempting to visit these sites would encounter a notice detailing AGCOM’s involvement in their blockage.

With Serie A noting that another 2,000 sites are on the verge of submission for blockage, it seems the fight against sports streaming piracy is intensifying.

This upcoming list would account for over half of all domains presently on Italy’s ISP blocklist.

Conclusion

Piracy remains a significant concern for the sporting industry, both in Italy and globally. As technology advances, so does the intricacy of pirating methods.

Yet, with combined efforts from rightsholders like DAZN and regulators like AGCOM, battles can be won against unauthorized streaming.

However, the constant game of “whack a mole” with pirate streaming sites will likely live on.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen AGCOM in the news regarding site blocking.
