The U.S. Government has seized the domains of over 55 popular sports streaming websites.
According to reports, the domains of several popular sports streaming websites have been seized by the US Government and other authorities.
With the FIFA World Cup attracting millions of viewers worldwide, we would only expect online piracy to increase.
It’s estimated that over 50 percent of all sports fans regularly use unauthorized streaming websites, apps, and services to broadcast live games.
US Government Seizes Popular Sports Streaming Sites
The sports streaming domains that have been seized by the U.S. Government include the following:
Many of these websites received millions of monthly visitors looking to watch live games for free.
When doing further research we found 9goaltv was blatantly promoting free access to stream the FIFA World Cup.
However, if you visit any of these websites today you will notice the following screen.
The message on this screen from the U.S. Government authorities reads the following:
“This domain name has been seized by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court for the District of Maryland under the authority of, inter alia, Title 18, United States Code, Section 2323.
It is unlawful to reproduce or distribute copyrighted material including movies, music, software, or games without authorization.
Individuals who do so risk criminal prosecution under Title 18, United states code, Section 2319. First time offenders convicted of a criminal felony copyright violation face up to five years in prison, fines, restitution, and forfeiture.”
While these domains were successfully seized, it remains unclear what happened to the operators of these pirate streaming sites.
Overall, it will be interesting to see what other streaming websites are next on the radar of the U.S. Government.
